Becoming a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) involves a rigorous training process, but it’s a rewarding career that allows you to pass on your knowledge and experience to others. To become a CFI, you must already hold a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) and Instrument Rating (IR). After meeting the prerequisites, you’ll need to complete a CFI course that includes both ground and flight training. You’ll also need to pass a practical test to obtain your CFI certification. Once certified, you can begin teaching students and building your experience as a flight instructor.
- Must hold at least a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) and Instrument Rating
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must have a minimum of 250 flight hours, with at least 100 hours of pilot-in-command time
- Must pass the FAA Fundamentals of Instruction (FOI) written exam
- Must pass the FAA Flight Instructor (FII) written exam
- Must pass a practical flight test with an FAA-designated examiner
- Must be able to read, write, and converse fluently in English.
